Background introduction
Objectives
→ To understand the individual and public health benefits of better sleep management.
→ To gain a critical understanding of the pros and cons of hypnotic drugs.
→ To explain the evidence for the development of problem focused treatment for insomnia.
Description
Many clinicians have had little or no education on the problem of insomnia and non-pharmacological approaches to managing insomnia despite these being advocated by current evidence and guidance. This section provides background evidence on the benefits of better sleep management, the pros and cons of hypnotic drugs and why and how we developed the evidence for implementing non-pharmacological approaches to insomnia in primary care as part of the REST project
