The Sleep Diary is a validated, reliable tool for assessing sleep quality especially when used as a repeated measure and is a standard outcome measure used in both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment of insomnia.

Subjective sleep quality can be derived from a Two-Week Sleep Diary completed over 7-14 days.

For every 24 hour period, the patient completes questions to indicate the type of day of the week (e.g. work, school, day off or vacation), time of retiring to and arising from bed, respondent’s estimate of sleep onset latency, nap times, number of times awake at night or nocturnal awakenings, wake time after sleep, whether they took any medication and when they drank coffee, tea, alcohol, cola or undertook physical exercise.
